Ok I stand corrected, gangster rap is degenerate
Just about everything on Strange Famous Records is excellent, as well.
I can't answer OP's question. It's not a racial team competition. Aesop Rock has been proven to have -- by far -- the largest vocabulary in rap, but Naughty By Nature sold more records. So who's better at the game?
I'll be honest. From Fishing Blues onwards, I haven't been able to listen to everything properly because my memory and concentration are screwed from illness.
But I do remember Seven's Travels and God Loves Ugly and When Life Gives you Lemons and thinking ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥! I even remember the very first Atmosphere track I ever heard was If I was Santa Claus from Lucy Ford, and knowing I'd come across something truly special.
The Beastie boys was huge in the 80s they always filled every venue they played at. Their fan base was huge. And a lot of other rappers took inspiration from them.
