Is he the best compositor of all time or is he just overrated?

As far as film composers go, he is quite overrated.

Basil Poledouris and Joe Hisaishi and Henry Mancini are the top masters. Even John Williams is better than him, despite being a filthy sellout.

definitely not the best composer of all time, not even modern i would say. not even just in films. i do think he is good though.

And no Zimmer isn't overrated.

Hans Zimmer is a great composer. Sometimes I find his more bombastic pieces grading but usually he knocks it out of the park. What I find baffling is, that he got awards for movies, where I think he went full Hans Zimmer mode but when he is really creative, it goes a bit under the radar.

Also it is really silly, that the Dune Part 2 soundtrack was not elligible to be nominated for the Academy Awards (no matter what you think about them) due to having elements from Dune Part 1 in it. While I think the first movies score is fantastic, the score for the second part is superiour.
