Will Steam get fined by Britain over the Online Safety Act?

Britain passed a new law where every chat room/message board on the internet has to follow their rules or Britain will fine them $18 million or 10% of Global Revenue.
Since it is a gold digging venture do you think Steam will block users from Britain or just pay the fine?

Is Britain and the EU trying to speedrun industry just leaving them? Companies will only tolerate so much BS before it no longer becomes worth it to continue to do business there.

That rule sounds fake, especially if the chats are never permanently recorded(non-recoverable).
And as Valve is a US company we'll politely bite our thumbs at Britain.

Didn't Twitch stop operating in South Korea at some point because of some ridiculous policy that South Korea was trying to enforce or whatever? It's not like it hasn't happened before. I'm not entirely sure what Britain wants in this case. Maybe something privacy related.

Either way, try to enforce too strict a rule, and a company like Valve could conceivably stop seeing that country as profitable. Though, I do think Valve genuinely cares about it's customers, and won't go that far. But that's just my opinion.

Youd just make a british only steam version and take out the free speech features. If ip is british your download is the censored steam version

Valve doesn't want to lose access to the U.K. marketplace with a great internet firewall of britain.

Of course, the G.D.P.R. might actually prevent this from being enforceable against private chats. I believe Britain was still an E.U. member state at the time that went into effect, so those laws might still be on the books there.

Ah, yeah, they could do this. There's already precedent too with Steam China. Then you have Germany's age verification requirements. Instead of "bending the knee", they just pulled all adult and unrated games from the store for Germans. It probably wouldn't be too difficult to remove all the social features from Steam for only UK Steam users.

I think the UK composes of about 2.6% of total Steam users. Even if a ton of UK users leave and go elsewhere, they would barely feel it.

i wouldnt really miss any of the British users on the forum. But i believe Steam already restricts young users from seeing mature content
