Charles Dickens
Topic inspired by The Nameless Gamer

I will not rant at how a great piece of work has been ruined by the greedy corporations and the stupid mindset of the people, where once Scrooge was the evil miser and now if you read what he says it is in fact very good advice for today's age.
Where once his views on buying crap that people could ill afford was seen as nasty ; seem now as good common sense.

Should you burn fossil fuels?
Or instead put money into an actual nice woolly jumper?
I say body warmers, jumpers! And onesies!
For all mankind on this day of giving directors around the world more money so you can be oppressed some more by consumerism.

Instead I will say how delightful some of the works by Charles Dickens is especially if you got the movie for it.

Everybody should have read or at least watched Oliver Twist especially the musical.

What I liked about Twist is Fagan.
I thought what a character.
If you ever have the time reading on thief taker general and London of the 17th through to 19th century you may find it of interest.

( Or just read Charles Dicken's books )

I can imagine people impoverished squirreling away whatever they could spare for in those times and increasingly in current times if you can't work or earn then all you can rely on is your savings.

As much as a rotter Fagan is I do pity him.
Dickens writes him so well.

Oliver Twist is your luckless orphan type.
If there is bad luck to be had, he is going to get it.

' please sir can I have some more '
Oh dear.

Do I have a favourite Charles Dickens story / book ?
So difficult but I will say the black and white films do the books justice.

If I was to pick film and book then
Great Expectations.

A boy meets an escaping convict out in the cold graveyard and gives him food.

The convict is recaptured and deported to Australia.
The boy is taken interest by a Miss Haversham an eccentric perhaps insane wealthy old woman who was jilted on her wedding day decades before.
She raises a girl and like to watch her tease young pip.

He still lives a poor life his family are hard workers and do the best they can for him.

Then he comes into wealth....

A great story highly recommended.

A clip from an old version it captures that atmosphere :

I might make the 2013 version onto the watchlist but it could not replace the original.

Whose your favourite character in the Dickens world of literature?
Do you have a favourite Dickens story?

Anything else Dickens related?

Read christmas carol but to be honest, his work is not my cup of tea.

No one can change that easily.

True, creating sheer terror at a guy whose worked his whole life is not really a good moral tale imho.
Off Topic doesn't like Charles Dickens?

Baldrick's novel: "Once upon a time, there was a lovely little sausage called Baldrick, and it lived happily ever after."
