Nato have been close to Russian boader for decades. Talking about Ukraine cant get Nato membership like the Baltics got and Finland make no sense. If Putin was affraid of Nato being close then he would have invaded the Baltics and Finland long ago aswell. Ukraine is just funny enough too important for Putin to lose to the West.

I've always wondered this as well but chalk it up to nobody understanding geography.

If Russia wasn't involved in the breakaway territory, one could make an argument. In reality, they had solders and were actively shelling and firing on the Ukrainian positions, and complained when Ukraine did the same to the "rebel" positions. There are no saints in this war, and Russia is no exception.
