What is it With Terrible Team Names?

Just as an example, one I witnessed recently, there is a team called the Princeton Tigers. Why? Who came up with that terrible name? It doesn't even alliterate, and it sounds like fourth-graders voted on it. Why not the Princeton Regals, or the Princeton Royals? At least then, the team sounds like it has anything to do with the town.

This phenomenon is not exclusive to local teams, either. The Tennessee Titans? The Florida Panthers? Tennessee has nothing to do with any titans, and Panthers are endangered in Florida, as well as being an imported species. Why not the Tennessee Riflemen, or the Florida Hurricanes? Those are FAR better team names, no? So why doesn't anyone make them?

"Milano Seamen"

I mean, Milan is not even a port city, so I can't even defend the name on those grounds.
