Is physical media on its last legs?

Do you think the next gen consoles will launch without disc drives?

Physical media will continue to be there for people who understand that subscription-based streaming is a scam.

Playstation without physical is worthless to me. Not just because my country is unavailable on PSN, but because PS is a good excuse to have physicals of my favorite games.

Subscription service should be a choice, not something that I need if there's something I want to watch. Just release things on DVD/Blu Ray or let me buy and download them digitally in .mkv or whatever type of file the show is.

Is hunting your own food and living cavemen style on it’s last legs? People will realise what scam food heated in the oven is when there is no more electricity.

Srsly we live almost in 2025, time to move on.

Physical media was gone a while ago. Give me an nvme with instant load times any day. Even my physical PS2, Xbox, Dreamcast, GameCube, Wii, and 360 are digital now. Outside of nostalgia, I'm not sure why people insist on relying on mechanical optical drives.

This comment would've been golden back in 2004.

No really, if video games have services such as GOG that pretty much let you have installers of games, why isn't there a similar thing for movies/shows?

If there is one then please open my blind eyes.

It will eventually disappear just like physical money because peoples are stupid and lazy, they don't understand that it will give power to only a few and as usual it's not going to be them.
Just imagine Steam closing it's doors.... where are your hundreds of games going?... no where, they'll be gone just like the money you paid cause you paid full price for games you now only have the PRIVILEGE to play.

Keep in mind that physical media will ensure the things you pay for are yours till you decide you don't want them anymore

They can't make a wallet full of $$ disappear but they can make your plastic useless any time they want

Physical media is still being used. It’s being used less, yes. But by all means it’s not dead.
Crystal Sharrd 26 dez. 2024 às 7:44
That's just one company, based on the title. Plus it's been making a comeback due to how awful streaming services cough cough HBO Max cough cough have been.
GlaceonChireiden 26 dez. 2024 às 7:50
Doubt it, there will always be a demand for actually owning your media. It'll probably be less prominent, but it'll never fully die. Especially for people in Sixty's situation where the digital store isn't even an option for them.

Besides if something as big, clunky, and unwieldy as records can still continue to exist despite there being multiple better alternatives then there's no reason something actually convenient like cds/dvds won't either.

It’s all fun and games until the digital market decides to screw you over. If you need me I’ll be collecting physical media.
