AAA games price inflation: thoughts?
In the last five years, I've watched as games went from $60 to $70 to $80-$100+.

Does anybody else feel that AAA games are kinda pushing the boundary on prices more than usual?

I mean, part of it is that I live in Japan and the exchange rate sucks right now, but I feel it's more than that. It's like the devs are trying to see how much we'd be willing to pay, and apparently we'd be willing to pay quite a bit.

On the flip side, though, I see games going on sale for 50% only six months or so after release.

Battlefield Hardline was released in March, and it's already 50% off. So is it that games are getting more expensive on release, but the prices come down sooner and go down more over time?

Can you point to such a game?

In The Netherlands games prices seem to be rather stable for years although new PS4 / X1 games are more expensive than new PS3 / X360 games. On PC they seem stable and within a few months a lot of games are way cheaper. AAA games are more expensive to make than in the past, but they often do not sell more, so companies try to make money in different ways like DLC.

Anno 2205
Fallout 4
Ac Syndicate
SF V
All game cost 59.99 usd but have different prices in my currency.
Steam always used local currency because our inflation is just bad, example of fallout 4 and SF v isnt using local currency and straight 1 : 1.

Dude all the games you listed are $60

I just checked them on steam. Anno 2205 has a Gold edition for 70 but that's usually implying extra features and content.

I used to buy new games all the time.

When games went to $60 . . .

I vowed never to pay full price for another game again.

I haven't , and I never will, as long as they stay this high.

To be fair... the cost of developing games has only been going up,.. Imean each new consoole genration ramps up the cost of development since the graphical fidelity requires more and more work..

THat's one of the things that Sank the PS Vita and the PSP. THe cost of development was too much of an investment and risk.

Compund that with the fact that games are now more prolific.,. EVen on the triple A side. A game has only about 1-3 months before it gets displace d by the latest hotness so the studios have to make as much of their investment back within that time as possible.

It's the Hollywood style of game development and marketing. Huge production costs, massive marketing campaigns, huge rush of sales on release before piracy kicks in.

Well, you're in Japan, and Japan along with Australia are sort of infamous for having horribly overpriced games, in part because I hear that (correct me if I'm wrong) the Japanese gaming customer base is sort of either hardcore (in terms of high willingness-to-pay) or nonexistent.

Then again, you seem to be talking about western AAA games, so I'm less sure.

In any case, I don't buy games at these prices anyway; I almost always wait until they are <$10 (and sometimes <$5). I also am willing to buy games several years after their release. So I'm firmly part of the "long tail".

thats what i told you. All game cost 59.99 / 60 usd, but every single of them have different price except anno and ac syndicate from ubi.
because of the local currency
Anno 2205 = 46.99 USD
AC Syndicate = 46.99 USD
Fallout 4 : 60 USD
SF V : 60.99 USD.

That wasnt the problem. It means publishers didnt use local pricing. Normally our price is always 42 for any 60 usd game but seeing the game like arma 3 which cost 60 usd and gta v that only cost 42 usd is really weird.

We have a pretty good exchange rate in the UK at the moment. The pound is generally still strong but the prices seem to go up sometimes.
They want 50 quid for the new Rainbow 6 game. Give me a break

i doubt ppl in my country buying sf v since its a fighting games + overpriced (for our currency).
but fallout 4 is pretty good deal but yeah i doubt ppl would buy it(but i will), our country tend to pirates thing which is why PES isnt available in ID. People not really interested in gaming here except those massive F2P or soccer that is all, no comment. Even you asked one of AAA Titles, only 1 : 100 ppl aged 18 - 40 will know.
I hate my country :nonplussed_creep:

Just wait for the regular holiday steam sales and you can pretty much pick up any AAA for 10-50% off.
