Japan Used to be the Top Game Developers. What happened?
What is Your opinion?

Here is an interesting article:

"Japan used to rule video games, so what happened?"[www.theverge.com]

""I think most Japanese publishers and developers have realized that, instead of trying to mimic what's popular outside Japan, they should make what they understand culturally and what they can do best," says Yoshida. This is sensible, of course, and can even lead to unpredictable Western successes like From Software’s unforgiving action RPGs Demon’s Souls and Dark Souls. But it’s a vicious circle — Western games grow more and more removed from Japanese consumer tastes, so Japanese companies serve their home market by stopping any attempt to appeal to the rest of the world, and Japan’s global influence continues to decline."

As a side note, Tomb Raider is a SquareEnix IP now. Actually, most of there successful titles are all IP purchased from other companies currently.
It is just a shift. Atari and all that were the big dogs before companies like Nintendo and SEGA. Then Atari went extinct and then those companies took over. They ran the roost for a while then other types of games became popular while Japanese properties became less popular. And that is kinda where we are now.

One of the most popular Japanese genre's was the JRPG for a time. Then games like Morrowind and KOTOR started showing a rise in quality in Western RPG's....then Oblivion, Fallout 3 and other great games came out while Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest remained stagnant.

Examples like that are why Japan is not top dog at the moment. Doesn't mean there won't be some freakish shift again tomorrow. I can promise that nobody thought any RPG would be beating Final Fantasy in sales numbers in the late 90's.

The point is Japan used to easily have the top 10-20 games most play/purchased games on the market. That is no longer the case any more.

I don't disagree! In the 90's, Japan was a powerhouse. That isn't the case anymore.

And no, I can't find any articles about how well Japan's doing as an industry---again I agree they're on a decline in terms of quality.

I still think you're undervaluing them though.

A single country on their own though? I still think Japan's on top.
Actually, USA is probably on top in that case, simply due to sheer volume. [/quote]

Maybe? I dunno. The UK and Canada especially have a number of great developers a lot of people lump in due to how homogenous their games are to American ones. Not saying your guilty, but Japan's got a pretty large industry too. We just don't see everything they have to offer, unfortunately.

EDIT: oops. Messed up my quotes.

I don't think so. Japanese develpers beget more little Japanese game developers. It is a never ending cycle. That's why Japanese people still "wax on and wax off," since Mr. Miyagi days from Karate Kid and Mr. Miyagi's father also waxed on and waxed off and his father's father waxed on and waxed off as well too.
