Do we REALLY need the F-35? is a legitimate question for Canada. The F-35 was a choice made partly based on our tight relationship with our former close ally.

When you really think about it and take realistic threats into consideration, an european fighter could do the job just fine. And for a lower price.

Canada has obligations to fulfill to nato. So yes. Canada has had the same f18s literally 50 years old now. I think it's time.

But you make a good point, why invest in military when we know damn well usa will come save our ass anyway. But I think that's trumps beef when he says the US is being taken advantage of.

Not every nato country uses the F-35. Also, give us a couple of years. We are already increasing millitary spending. Which is something I always agreed with. Just not going to be the kind of change that happens overnight,

This plane is not suitable for Canada by any stretch anyways. Too expensive and maintenance-heavy. Canada needs defense and stand-off capability. As it stands, aside from a few legacy-Hornets, we have no other effective air defenses to speak of.

The smarter purchase could have been the F-15EX. It can fly high enough and fast enough to threaten everything, carrying up to 12 AIM-120Ds, and also JASSMs for precision ground strikes, with the latest JASSM being developed having a range of up to 1000 km.

This can allow it to be effective at range, as opposed to being stealthy. Canada doesn't need to waste money on the more expensive plane, designed for a more narrowed, specific role.

But I know people who start the convo with 'block' are larpy, and cost/benefit wise, I get more value engagement from people who engage: self-selecting economics.
