Is Mario Kart the worst racing game ever?

I've heard it often said that its a masochist's dream, but this ludicrous s**t right here, has happened to me way too often:

Its not just unbalanced, I sometimes feel like its designed that way if you or your opponents are lagging. Projectiles just seem to come the f**k outta nowhere.

No matter what strategies you use, you will get screwed sooner or later in a race. Especially if some creep and their 2nd player helper is targeting you, and only you for the cardinal sin of beating them once.

I get excited when I play F-ZERO (a franchise Nintendo refuses to acknowledge or give a worthy sequel to following the masterful GX which is now over 20 years old) but I get nothing but stressed when I play Mario Kart online.

It's just chaotic, not exactly skill based but it's a lot of fun when not taken seriously.

i think you are looking too seriously at it. as a competitive racing experience, yes, it is unfair and filled with things that are going to ruin your chances of winning no matter how good you are playing. but it is not being meant to be a competitive racing experience, it is a silly party game that has been designed for people of all ages and skill levels.

i agree that i am preferring racing titles like fzero gx over mario kart generally, but mario kart is meant to be enjoyed in a silly way. it is meant to be a constant game of cat and mouse, where all players are being both the cat AND mouse regardless of whether they are in first or last place. first place players get weak items, last place players get strong items. it constantly shifts back and forth, the rankings of the racers. it is chaotic, silly fun. i think if you are being stressed, you have to change your mindset around what mario kart is attempting to achieve.

agreed. i will forever be sad that the diddy kong racing sequel was canceled. one of those "what could have been" things so to speak.

i want to play the ctr remake so bad...i loved the original growing up. i hope to one day. i have watched a playthrough and it looks so good

It's not a sim, it's a kids game. Of course it isn't a serious racing game. That's the whole point. And neither is Need for Speed or Burnout either.

Sonic ASRT is legit great. Online's a bit dead these days sadly.

With friends, yeah, it is a party game, but online with strangers, the whole VR points thing, losing rank if you lose too many races too often, it is competitive. F**king hell, one race I had, was really intense, constantly getting hit, desperately keeping up with the other players, taking shortcuts with tricks... just to not finish worse than 5th, and that's not really fun.

Why can't Nintendo ever get the balance of items right? They are broken in 8's deluxe edition, there's too much going on, with too much chaos in online play. No, actually, why won't Nintendo do it right? They as a company, purposefully f**k something up all the time. What kind of bizarre culture are we dealing with here?

People say that FZERO GX was a game so good it killed its franchise. That to anyone who watches movies and knows what franchise killers are, sounds utterly absurd. Games made by any other studio or developer other than the Big N, are usually deemed franchise killers if they are so bad, not if they are good. I think the company has issues, it obsesses over gimmicks, not gameplay. I think that's the reason why I'm not enjoying video games as much as I should.
