Discrimination.
Here's an example of an Affirmative Action. Take a picture of ANY executive board meeting... and count the non-white people. I bet you'd need one (maimed) hand at most.
Anyway, minorities are composing ever larger proportion of the populations in the world, due to immigration, miscegenation, and population growth, even in places where they traditionally they are not seen such as, such as in East Asia, so it makes sense that workplaces would become more diverse too.
More than half of the births in the US since the beginning of the decade are "minorities", and their proportion is only increasing.
You're not from here, so of course you don't see it.
The place where I live is irrelevant to point being discussed, and you do not even know where it is.
Either way, DEI is a general framework that applies everywhere, not just in a specific country or firm. It is a fact that certain minorities are discriminated against, and such initiatives try to rectify that, on the long term.
It does not apply also specifically for/against certain races - i.e. Caucasian and Eurasians in Japan and Korea are a growing minority there, and certainly have higher rates of discrimination in the workplace than "regular Japanese" workers.
That being said, I do not agree with quota based numbers for things like jobs or university positions based on race. But that is just one tool that can be used as part of DEI initiatives, though one too extreme to my liking.
You aren't seeing it in action. You're reading the idea of it. You don't work at a company with a small group doing DEI.

DEI is the only discrimination I see that is acceptable to some of society.
Unfortunately, discrimination is still socially acceptable, to a degree, by many, and this is what DEI training and measures tries to rectify.
Lots of people perfectly accept it. Most people do hide these from others, except family, friends, and other close workers or people you think are like-minded, but just because it is behind close doors does not mean it does not exist, and this ultimately may trickle down to more explicit actions down the way.
