Probably not. The Simpsons was a show by pop culture junkies, so it seems more likely to be a play on the name of actor Ed Flanders. In 1989, he was still a household name, hence the pun.

knowing the simpsons writers, it's possibly both. i bet someone on the writing staff would've made the connection as well. they're like that.

Holland is just two regions of da netherlands (north and south), that wood be like if i just call america carolina instead since its got two states of north and south carolina

they call the whole place holland. i literally am there a couple of times a year, i am yet to meet anyone who calls it netherlands or nederland
