Cable-TV systems in Germany have been upgraded at some point to allow bi-directional data transmission as well, so that's what I'm using right now.
Compared to the above, it's probably closest to DSL in some ways. DSL started off as a way to have high-speed data transmission on top of existing telephone lines, without interfering with the telephone stuff. Cable-TV-internet is similar in the sense that it's using wiring that was originally meant for something else, and still allows this original service to exist undisturbed.
Also, similar to DSL, cable-TV-internet has asymmetric speeds -- download-rates are considerably higher than upload rates.
My parents use DSL that goes through the telephone box... probably something similar to what you are using.
They're limited to around 25 mbit/s, on a good day.
Since that is too slow for me I decided to use cellular via my SIM router; far more unstable as it depends on the weather, but also faster.
