I have a fan in the background, which will work for around 20 minutes or so anbd then stop on its own.
After years of using this method, my brain now autimatically relates "fan sound" to "sleep now".

I'll second this, the only difference is that I sleep with the fan on all night.

i cannot sleep without a fan either. not even necessarily for the cool air, the sound itself is very calming to me. i also like to sometimes keep a twitch stream or tv or youtube video or film on very low volume, so it sounds like a whispering. this is relaxing as well

Dont drink or eat anything 4 hours before you go to bed. It cause you to get warmer and make it worse. Also dont do exercises. Make sure your bed room is only 18 degress and have fresh air from an open window to make the air in your room better.

How few?

The best way is to do a good workout or two during the day. This will wear your body down to where it wants to sleep.

Some people are adrenaline junkies and hardly ever sleep. So it really is a personal thing.
But if you need sleep before work then regulate your day so you want to go to sleep at a good time to wake up and get ready for work.

Once you get your body into a routine it pretty much takes care of itself.

Avoid eating late.
Don't get caught up into watching something or doing something only to find out how late it got.
<I did that last night myself, I normally crash around 830pm and get up around 4am. I started watching a series and thought it was 12 eps but after 24 it was 1am. Oops>

Probably getting off steam for today would be your first move.

It's all about the time you wake up. You wake up late, you sleep late.

I just study a lot, do exercises and at the end of the day, I'm so tired that I lay down on my bed and fall asleep without even notice
