while there are guns that are banned, you can get a gun in the UK. you just have to go through the legal process and adhere to a lot of strict procedures regarding storage, maintaining paperwork, etc.

The population hasn't doubled in 50 years yet the homicide rate is around 120% higher...

Why do you think that is?

I know it's hard to go against what your criminology lecturer tells you at your polytechnic university but try to apply some critical thinking to the situation - the only statistic you can trust which is somewhat hard wired is homicide, either someone was murdered or they weren't and this is recorded on a death certificate.
