What do people mean when they say "you only live once"?

Well if you only live once it doesn't matter if you die, If there's something else then you have something to look forward to. doesn't really matter.
there saying do as you like in life just do it dont think about it do it you only have one shot in life then your dead

It's not the full saying. People trim down what they say when they think the full sentiment can be assumed. "You only live once so you might as well make the most of it", or "you only live once so enjoy it while you can" are fuller sentiments. The idea is that you don't have forever to do everything you might ever want to do, and if you never choose to do anything worthwhile you are wasting your one shot at life.

It's an excuse people give themselves to take opportunities when they present themselves, especially opportunities that are otherwise bad ideas since good ideas have other better justifications and no real reasons to go against them.

It’s like they know what’s gonna happen, does it anyways, and complained that it happened.
