been SO long since i heard of this game. i did not even realise it was on steam!? i remember playing it back on the original xbox at a friends house, many years ago. thank you for bringing this to my attention!
But by far, the best thing about this weapon is its terrible reputation. It is often maligned as being unreliable, prone to jams and mis-feeds. That means nobody else wants it, and I can be reasonably sure of getting one.
The jamming issues aren't caused by the weapon itself, they're caused by the inferior lubricant the military uses. Pretty much any civilian dry lubricant resolves those issues immediately. It also helps to use civilian 5.56 stick powder rounds for greater muzzle velocity, rather than cheap M855 ball ammunition.
Do that, and this thing is a light machine gun, an accurate point-target weapon, and even a bit of a sniper rifle if you have the skill and the right rounds loaded. Tungsten-core AP just works wonders at range. People just have trouble getting it to fire only one round at a time, because the trigger-pull is a bit heavy, and they generally just want to go full -auto anyway. I don't blame them, but that does cause a skill issue.
And to be fair, the M249 is NOT a sniper rifle because it fires from an open bolt. Whatever you shoot at, you'd better be sure you hit it the first time, because your sight-picture is going to be all messed up by the time that heavy bolt returns. Hopefully, the target at least runs so you can use automatic fire. Or it stays still, so a quick burst or five will convince it to stay put while you line up another shot. If it gets behind cover quickly enough, though, you've lost it.
It also can't mount a bayonet, but at 22.5 pounds fully loaded, it makes a great club or ram, while at the same time, is capable of being fired from almost any position with ease. The muzzle velocity makes it unsuitable for home defense beyond that, but then we don't have machine-guns for burglars.
For those, I have the Beretta 92F, which I have nothing good to say about. It's just the civilian version of the pistol I trained most with and know best. Any weapon you know well is better than one you don't.
