A sweeping executive order that President Donald Trump issued on Monday bans the State Department from issuing passports with “X” gender markers.

Former Secretary of State Antony Blinken in June 2021 announced the State Department would begin to issue gender-neutral passports and documents for American citizens who were born overseas.

Dana Zzyym, an intersex U.S. Navy veteran who identifies as nonbinary, in 2015 filed a federal lawsuit against the State Department after it denied their application for a passport with an “X” gender marker. Zzyym in October 2021 received the first gender-neutral American passport.

Passports had been allowing people to identify as M, F, or X. Now X genders will be banned. Unclear what will happen to people who already have that designation on their passport, but X renewals will need to pick a binary gender.

Even transgenders flip between the two - M or F.

X would just be like saying they don't identity with those or their original gender? What's the big deal with that?

At least back in Trump's Miss Universe days he called transgenders a "buzz" and where little to no issues. Trump went as far to prevent them from being banned and claimed they could use any bathroom like what.... that was until Trump himself walked in the changing rooms on girls as young as 15 year olds, then had to sell both Miss Universe and Miss Teen USA. He therefore sold Miss Universe to a transgender. Then went off to defend both P-Diddy and Jeffery Epstein, calling them both terrific guys and good friends of his.

Having an unknown gender doesn't seem such a big deal? When most of them do so to actually avoid people like that and aren't even sexually active. Some going as far to assume if they weren't such-and-such gender, they wouldn't of been sexually attracted towards and raped by another.

Because of how ambigously they defined genders, they created a potential loophole that could allow any US citizen to be considered female by the law. Which is the funniest thing I’ve seen this week. Imagine someone trying to dodge a draft saying he’s actually female and can’t be drafted! Trump just keeps on giving with his half assed plans and hilariously bad executions of them.

it is meant to be used when sex is not known or is complicated or is not recorded, ie some countries dont have sex on ID or some people dont have a legal sex due to being born intersex

sure, almost never, but we still have an international right to birth registration, and such information is often used for passports, including when there is no sex on the birth certificate and in some cases the passport must legally match it. the passport standard is meant to be robust enough to cover every single person on the planet, not "almost" everyone. x exists for the edge cases it needs to, its really not a big deal. the issue is it was left up to the countries to decide how to issue unspecified sex passports, which means it is needlessly politicised by "both sides".

I'm not the one who ruined this for everyone. You may want to direct that blame towards the ones who appropriated the identity of intersex people and used them to get something they wanted.
