'Out of sight out of mind' theory
Before most of the world was discovered by explorers, people just lived their life and didn't know that anything existed outside of it. Like ancient people probably lived on little farms, and to them that was the whole world as they knew it.

Now I always see people watching the news and involving them in stuff going on all across the world (usually negative stuff), but yet they have never been to those places, or even seen them in person. So it's like they are filling their thoughts with problems that aren't in their REAL world at all. Their real world is just living in their house and living day to day.

So to me, I just try to live in the world as I know it, which is a small town in midwest USA. Anything outside of that, I don't need to worry about. But what do you think of this ideology, is it selfish or a good idea?

i think there are few reasons people spend their time worrying of problems that are not their own personally.

- carefree: they live an unburdened life. perhaps they are well off, healthy, are always being surrounded by loved ones and hobbies. they have little/no strife in their life, so they seek it out

- arrogant: they think they have all the answers. homer simpson meme goes "everyone is stupid except me". they know better than all scientists, all thinkers, all politicians, everyone. so they have to let others know what they believe is the truth

- compassionate: perhaps they simply want to spread word of suffering and injustice, and want others to know so they can help bring such things to an end and get people help.

- boredom: life can be boring. sometimes, your life specific as you settle on routine. so, you seek a world outside your own through platforms such as the internet, because it is not always so easy to go to other places in real life

is it selfish to just live in your own "bubble"? no. as long as you are not hurting anyone. everyones circumstances are different, sometimes certain situations are stopping us from living in any way but inside this bubble. live your life as you wish as long as it hurts no one and makes you happy.

All problems are real problems, in absolute aspect, all of them in some way change your life in a miniscule way, maybe you just can't see that now because you might live a quiet sedentary lifestyle, that might not be the case in future, unless you are a robot who does the same things throughhout entire life.

Maybe a better question is, what caused this philosophical dillema in you in the first place and why?

Another thing is, how do you even know that people have no business in knowing about something? Whether it's surface-level thinking or you actually have a spy device in someone's brain, knowing everything about them?

Whether your point of view is a good idea or a product of being selfish, lies in the retrospection of that idea.

As the famous philosopher once said. I think therefore OT isn't
It's that whole "If a tree falls in the forest does it make a sound if no-ones around" but instead of thinking about it, you're yelled at for not hearing the sound.

i think this is a dilemma every human on the whole planet faces, at some point. they think of problems in other countries, other peoples problems they do not know, or even the problems of people in other time periods. it can feel overwhelming, to think of all this suffering and troubles around the world even if they are not impact your life at that moment in noticeable ways.

you feel powerless, because you know there are limited, or possibly being none, ways in which you can help or do something.

it is simple human empathy, for others. we feel for others and their problems even if we do not know them and never will.
Unlike back then with current global economy, environmental and political influence something that happens on other side of the world can directly influence your life. Choosing to bury your head into sand wont make the bad things go away.
