Music in restaurants and shopping malls
Why is music often played in these places? Is there a mystery to this? What music do you hear most often?

relaxation purposes, atmosphere, something to fill the silence when things are being quiet. i usually hear orchestral music, or at christmas time, christmas music. sometimes i hear various popular songs and such, though this is usually in pubs/restaurants

i guess i never really thought about why. but like i said, im guessing just to relax people.

I like it when they repeat the same few songs and you can see the employees going insane.
Its all a scheme.

They play corporate pop music in stores and public places so that they ear worm their way into the zeitgeist.

I could get into the conspiracy theories i have regarding how music changes your brain and emotions etc.

Basically its all just consumerism and mind control but im too tired to get into it all.

Mainstream music isnt popular because its good. Its popular because it is shoehorned in by psychologists and marketing experts.
My shopping mall plays a repeat playlist of songs. The song I hear the most is Boogie Wonderland.

I like that.

the music is more for the benefit of those who have to spend 8+ hours there...:-)
Music is fine but be wary of lighting in restaurants, some (but not all) use it to mask the quality of decor and/or food. :chirp:

Actually, let me backtrack on this a bit because some places have their music up way too loud and it becomes annoying. :badluck:

When I worked in Retail it was often classic rock that was played. But then they would switch to Christmas music, which was nauseating after a while.
In the 90's I stayed a while in the Hilton in Colombo (Sri-Lanka) and it had a whiter shade of pale on repeat (instrumental version) now I HATE THAT SONG

Some restaurants do that to increase turnover rate.
It gives the atmosphere, and after a lot of time passes, a nostalgia, such simple thing as music, can change something from being ordinary and unimportant into a age cult classic.

There is a psychological aspect that some stores tap into. Slower beats lull shoppers into a leisurely pace, while faster rhythms urge them to move more quickly. This subtle manipulation is an art, designed to control the flow of traffic, preventing the place from becoming too crowded or too empty.

I'd love to switch out the muzak for some speedcore on a slow day, just to see what happens.
