Deathmatch with double shotgun in Doom 2 is good too. Real human players are much faster than those pink demons I mentioned above. Also more unpredictable.
A shotgun of the correct configuration loaded with the correct load of shot does have great effective range for what it is. The REAL negative with a shotgun is the risk collateral damage, because once it travels about 25 to 50 yards the pattern is about six to eight inches wide, that is with the correct load.
In combat you WANT that collateral damage.. The guys with the shotguns stay low and WAIT until their opposition is close then just scatter the shot in their general direction. It's a technique, a SPECIAL weapon for SPECIAL Tactics. Which why they refer to it as a TACTICAL shotgun.
How many engagements would be more than 25 yards? That implies typical cover masking approach which is why shotguns are still used for light duty and general patrol. Or demolitions and breaching.
Lady in DMC4 had a straight up busted shotgun, the damage of a fully charged blast had a feedback so satisfying I can't think of anything coming close to it. Also being able to nunchuck while firing at rapid speeds is always good.
I also gotta say the shotgun play in Insurgency Sandstorm. I run suppressed shotguns for CQB a lot and it's fun just hip firing people into the afterlife and then killing the rest of their squad on a flank because nobody heard it.
