just go to a free club then, not all require paid membership
Some people go to the gym so they can walk or run on a treadmill, Why not just walk to shops or friends places and stuff? or take a bus and walk part of a distance, You may find you need your car way less.

but people may think you're poor if you walk to the shops
if you want to walk it's better to pay for a gym, don't you want to fit into society?

Originally Answered: Why do people pay for gym memberships when they can get a home workout routine that is just as effective and much cheaper?

Many reasons.

1. A home gym takes space that many people don't have.
2. A home gym is an investment. A monthly gym membership can be cancelled without repercussions.
3. A gym should have a wide variety of equipment so you can do a wide variety of exercises with machines or free weights. With a home gym you are stuck with the same few things.
4. Home workout equipment costs a lot of money, especially if you are into heavy weightlifting. It costs a lot to buy and ship six or seven hundred pounds worth of plates, plus you need a bar and a rack and what will happen to your garage floor if you drop all that weight?
5. For some people, the gym is a place to be social. For other people it is a place to be alone, a temporary haven from family and work where you can focus on yourself.
6. Gyms often have classes or trainers or daily workouts to keep clients motivated. Most people aren't experts and don't want to plan a workout every day.

that's what I expect from redditors, putting some comments that don't even answer the topic why people pay to lift weights

no, its not the lifting alone. just like with the other normally accepted logical things you refuse, you pay for more than that:

- access to heavy, unwieldy equipment
- access to space to use said equipment
- equipment is serviced regularly to prevent dangers or injury that you probably wouldn't know yourself if you were in your garage
-access to showers, towels, and locker changing area, so you dont have to live in sweaty clothes all day.
-the maintenance of the facility that houses all of above.

as always, go buy a weight set, and move that around with you a few times, i bet, though, you just dumpster it the first time you realize 'oh im going to have to move all several thousand kg with me...'

when you're at a certain level of athleticism, you don't always feel like ending up 20km away from where your home is lol.
