both of my cats are extremely gentle and do not mind. but no cat or dog (or animal) really enjoys being hugged very much. they often enjoy close contacts and physical touch, but hugs are restrictive and animals are not really into it. if my cats ever "protest" i immediately stop, their will matters to me.
That do happen sometimes. Ticks get too greedy and want more love they they can handle. As do mosquitos.

There was that Shiba Inu i babysited, she needed love so i gave her a hug after a while, so she is more trusting i think it did help, her owner sadly had to leave her home far too often which is i needed to help, she wasn't very social and pretty agressive with other animals.
