France declared war on Germany after the Germans invaded Poland. France even invaded Germany; they were hoping for their allies to follow, but no one did. Poland fell, France went back to the French lines of defence, and that infamous line of defence was compromised by the choice of Belgium and their stupid neutrality. Originally the Maginot Line should have been made up to the channel, but the Belgians didn't want to be trapped with the Germans on the wrong side of the Maginot Line. Instead, the M-Line would be linked with the Belgian line of defence, and both the British and French would be helping Belgium to hold their line, but then, they declared their neutrality massing their army along the French border because both the British were ready to enter Belgium to try to reach their defensive line in time, but what is happening when a country is invaded? Refugees are swarming the roads, trapping the allies on the roads, an easy pick for both the German planes and artillery. Worse, the supply could not reach the mechanised and armoured divisions. When your tanks run out of fuel and ammo, this is game over. Had to this mess: The Danish surrendering after a platoon-sized skirmish, the Dutch surrendering after a week. The UK withdrawing their armies without warning the French and the Belges...
Belgium surrendered, leaving the french alone agains the whole German army, the Germans where saying that the french fought like lyons, even attacking at 1 vs 20 inflicting huge casualties to the Germans. That's well resumed, France have a very long History of trying to help others and being betrayed in the process. I genuinely think we will be better served if we stopped helping anyone instead, as others obviously never reciprocate anyway. But our leaders are dumb.

I think "Poland" should be in quotation marks because it was germany's land before ww1 and germans living there even before ww2.
