Step 1. Die.
Step 2. Find your way out of your body. This can take up to 3-60 days depending on body composition, attachment to physical form, and whether your body tends to recoup resources for the purposes of maintaining the structures you might find to be a barrier, such as the dural membrane. Willpower is the name of the game, but there are physical processes you need to interact with. Even as a living energy being you're still comprised of physical matter, just not quite as solidly as most.
Step 3. You will start to fade immediately; the body was providing an energy matrix which fed you, centered you, and kept you from becoming another note in the wind. It made an automated pattern you could fall into and draw from, which sustained you without your efforts or attention. If you float up to the ionosphere there's lots of free energy there, but you'll become an intrinsic member of ghost society and likely become dependent on their support and infrastructure to descend. If you even want to anymore. There are earthside structures, called manses, which can gather and make available energy. Houses with the right materials for instance, especially those you've worked on yourself and made complimentary to your signature (even if you didn't have any high-energy or energy-gathering materials involved, most materials are already energy-complimentary and can be embedded via proximity.) There are also groves, natural plant formations, geological formations, loose gates, etc. I wouldn't recommend a gate though you're crusing to get ghost-haunted if you do.
Step 4. Don't do anything that would make anyone that knows how dissipate you.
Something to keep in mind about step 4 is that I'm much, much worse as a ghost than a living person. Most of the crazy stuff I do involves breaching that barrier at least temporarily, so I can make full use of my understanding of physical processes from a point of proximity to their foundational phenomena, which is easy for me because I'm practically swiss cheese already. Having a body simply keeps me focused, and able to understand emotions.
Also it's likely that your idea of self will become tied up in your emotional snapshot at death; you don't have the chemicals which make them anymore, but if you stop listening to that snapshot you'll start becoming someone else. Maybe even someone that wants to be alive, or asleep in "Heaven's" backups (lots of important people remain as ghosts, and it's important that their memory-gestalt is kept current, so there's a physical electronic Heaven as well as whatever collective world people have built in the Ionosphere*,) rather than a ghost. Or a terror that needs to be put down. So decide how you feel very carefully, and keep point 4 in mind. ... but, you can be who you want to be, now. The process of changing your emotional state is relatively similar, whether you have feedback mechanisms for it or not.
*memory gestaltation and contiguous multi-reformation of disparate waveforms is a common, naturally-occurring phenomena; the machines are just easements. you're guaranteed to reform eventually, it just speeds (or slows) the process up. (kind of extraneous to the point, but people get these weird ideas like 'blowing up the deus ex will fix this.' No, there's more copies of him than there are of anything in the universe, and we need the machine itself to deal with him. And also this is all very natural and not artifical construction, the tools we've built for it notwithstanding.)
