Post COVID are movie theaters obsolete?

My girlfriend and I enjoy buying movies. We don't do Streaming, although we can see why many use it.

But with our local theater closed permanently and the nearest one an hours drive, even $20+ Blu-ray/ DVD combos look good.

Spending the gasoline, time, etc, just doesn't seem worth it.

I purchased Black Panther 2 (DVD), Black Adam (Blu-ray/DVD combo), Fast X (Blu-ray/DVD combo) for about $50 total including tax.

Again I get people streaming cheaper, but I intend to watch these movies multiple times.

I'm just curious about other's opinions.

they been pretty pointless since the internet existed and high speed internet.

I think Revenge of the Sith was the last one I went to.

My golden age of movie going was rango, hop, rio, etc. Funny pixar movies by myself.

I didn't have to be worried about being judged by my relatives for seeing kids movies.


My very last movie might have been, the lightening thief (Percy Jackson)

Cost has became too high to bother with going. 4K screens, blue-ray and streaming has killed it more than covid, although forcing them to close down for a year shortened the viability of the theater.

i think cinemas have been on their way out since netflix&its opponents came onto the scene.

being at home you can stock as much snacks as you want, you don't have to hear someone's cellphone go off, someone talking, or someone being disgusting in the back seats.

avoids the hassle imo.

And football requires a 'foot' and a 'ball', it's not rugby, but rather soccer. Just by calling it American Football doesn't suddenly make it make logical sense to the rest of the world.

I personally was just clarifying it at first, but American assume their broken English is the only one around the world for some reason?

Anyways, for the cinemas, yes they are still around and running a smaller selection of movies post-covid. I believe the issue is the movie development during covid, rather than the cinemas themselves.

I am not American.

In my language we don't have these issues as our language is a lot more developed, complex and detailed than English.

I still go to the cinemas for fun but one I go to is usually empty with near 10-15 people at most (which is why I love going there). I think most people just use Streaming services and are happy to wait a month or two. I just go for fun.

Only memories that really stand out are Aliens, Terminator 2, and the Star Trek movies. Rest were pretty meh.

Well IMSHO families, 2 spouses and children, are better off having a big (60"+) 4K TV, not just for movies, but cable, streaming, videogames, makes it a solid investment.

They were kind of dying before Covid and I don't think it really accelerated/slowed their demise.

Movie theatres provide an experience, not just a film., You do not get the same experience at home, although it is far cheaper to watch a streaming service or wait. As for DVDs, they are costly and relatively worthless, let alone un-environmental.

Whenever a family member says they're going to cinema, I just quickly search it up on my phone, turn it on loud volume and show them the movie opening then proceed to ask them why are you wasting your money when you can watch it at home?

Cinemas should have been dead long time ago. The latest movies and series are easily accessible online. Also, in this era of streaming service, they should start offering them for $5 or something.

Crazy home theatres are not affordable or fully widespread. It's also not possible to watch a film as it releases, at home, except for piracy/illegality.
Some home theatres and projectors are affordable, mostly poor quality, but are definitely an option.
Ultimately it's still a service you are paying for, for many reasons; number 1 being getting out of the house. People go for the experience.

People like to say the same thing about renting video tapes. The theatre experience is better than that tho at least.

Digital projectors seem to be well evolved now. Decent one's probably aren't that much. Sound system tho... that's where the money is.
