I think its time for valve to make there move. There is a lot of anger now around the oculus rift. And valve could use it to there advantage,i know sony will.
I have never actually belived in the tech because i have never seen it action. But still its all very intresting. To say there isnt even a product on the marketplace.
+1 was about to say that its a crappy gimmic too. Also just putting this out there like 3d movies its probably going to have some nasty ass side effects from usage like the huge headaches i get from 3d movies :/.
First developing an amazing VR themselves, demonstrating it to be even better than current VR, giving tech to Oculus Rift just to let them be bought by an awful company like Facebook. A company that is the complete opposite of the niche that supported OR to begin with. Nothing but disappointment after building up so much hype, Oculus Rift and Valve would've formed a dream team if only Valve wasn't so passive.
Now Carmack is working for Facebook, the biggest joke in the gaming industry!
People said, sleep on it and think it over.
I've slept on it.
And here's the conclusion I've come to.
The idea that any purchase of the OR will in anyway benefit a company that I think should not exist....
R.I.P. Occulus.
I no longer care if that $2B churns out a device that is 100x better than what you would have brought to market.
Facebook needs to die.
And that is how my wallet is going to vote.
You could have sold out to anyone..... but them.
Their idiots, because they failed to see the elephant in the room.
And that is...
The only people interested in something like Occulus are also mostly anti-FB, it goes hand in hand. People are not interested in VR to interact with other people. They are interested in VR to escape from other people. And you honestly think that people are going to prefer to put on a pair of huge goggles instead of just typing in an online social environment..... hah. It's called the path of least resistance... FB + Occulus is not the path of least resistance. FB + Keyboard + Mouse....
I mean, just think about it..... you see it already in many cases throughout social gaming.
People don't plug a mic in to talk to you. THEY TYPE TO YOU ON A KEYBOARD!
So, this, FB + VR crap is already a failure on arrival.
Text is more anonymous and that's why it will always dominate internet social environments.
With that being said.
Now that we all understand that the only people who will use OR for "Socializing" will be actual friends and family.
How many of them do you think will see the need to be able to see an "avatar" representation of their family/friends in a virtual room that doesn't exist?
If anything, Microsofts Kinect + Skype handles that market already if they are that desperate to see each others faces. You won't be seeing each others faces if your using the occulus rift...... I think the reasoning behind that is obvious. YOU GOT A GIANT ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ BLACK THING ON YOUR FACE!
This is like an orange having sex with an apple.
Then trying to find a word that rhymes with purple for the name of the kid it pops out.
Nothing about it makes sense.
I would have much preferred Virgin Interactive Entertainment as the buyer.
Heck, it would have fit to.
ViRgin, they even have the intials of VR in their name.
And I'm sure some designer would have had a hay-day making an awsome logo for Virgin VR.
I think that Notch is absolutely right. We can speculate whether or not Facebook is a good fit, but it is definitely not the future the backers of their Kickstarter campaign had in mind. I am really glad I didn't support them, because now I would want my money back.
Everybody was afraid that there will be a Kickstarter campaign when someone will just take the money and run away. In my opinion, that's exactly what Oculus did with the Facebook acquisition.
And one side note, it's amazing how all the Sony's competitors keep shooting themselves in the leg. 24 hours ago, we were speculating whether Project Morhpeus can succeed against Oculus. Now, we ask whether Oculus with Facebook is still relevant, while we have Morpheus in the works. Amazing.
My bottom line, its ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ principal to not have something that was a kickstarter backed project, to sell out. Facebook i hate so much that i deleted my account of 9+ years back in december, i dont want anything to do that service ever again. I cannot stand the thought of John Carmack, working for facebook now. I cannot bear to see oculus rift rebranding (this will happen) to the facebook look, i can go on on but the message is clear gamers dont anything to do with facebook.

Look at phones.
How often do people text vs talking?
People prefer to text when in an online social environment.
HOW THE HELL DO THEY NOT REALIZE THIS?
OR went from being a device for hardcore gamers, to something that is going to be catered towards people playing words with friends..... Talk about completely missing the demographic.

Facebook has no interest in using the Oculus as a hardcore gaming peripheral. However, that is what it was billed as when it asked the community for money on Kickstarter. The community responded by DONATING over 2 million dollars. Then what does OVR do? Shatter all those promises, all in the name of making a quick buck. They have successfully subsidized their initial start-up fees from the pockets of gamers.
People who pledge on Kickstarter do so to help fund the vision, NOT to help fund Facebook's new multi-billion dollar venture. Will these Kickstarter backers be seeing their money back? No. Will these same people be willing do dump large sums of money into the next Kickstarter they believe might have potential? Probably not. And herein lies the problem with all of this.
OVR and Facebook have snake bitten a community that only wanted to see what greatness virtual reality could become in gaming. Kickstarter and all future start-ups will suffer, the gaming community will suffer, and the rich will get richer.
Share on Facebook link right below the number of supporters. Oh the irony lol.
