Metroidvania Type Games or Sidescrollers with progression

I just bought a controller and I want a Metroidvania type game or a sidescroller. Something where I control one character and has skill based combat.

I haven't actually played it yet, but it seems Dust: An Elysian Tale is a well regarded metroidvania style game.

Dust: An Elysian Tail is a great game, but I don't know if it offers as much Metroidvania as you'd like. I have never played any Metroid games for very long, and perhaps it's roughly the same in Metroid, but the "Metroid"-ish things in Dust are optional, make up only a few parts of the game, and most of the time you'll find stuff you may not really need. So, it's something for the completionist in you.

The combat in Dust is a bit watered down. It's alright and fun, but you don't really need much skill for it, spamming the same combo and special attack all over pretty much will do.
