Without us, France wouldn't even exist as a country. And that wasn't cheap.
Really it comes more down to common language and similar political philosophies between England and her former colonies. Even during the revolution, many Brits supported American independence, mostly because of the political differences between them and George III.

I don't know where this "More friendly" nonsense is coming from. The only thing that bridges Americans closer to the UK is speaking the same language. A lot of Americans don't know a second language as it is not mandatory. I think it should be.
