7.62 also tends to fare better longer range. 5.56 likes to tumble past a significant yardage.
Ah but ARs can be loaded in cartridges all the way up to 50 Beowulf. Heck you can even get bolt action uppers that take single shot 50 BMG.

Oh, interesting. Well, I mean, I probably wouldn't need a bolt action. I suppose if I wanted to just use it like a shotgun, but I wouldn't be aiming for targets incredibly far away, as I am not the best in terms of being able to reliably hit a moving target over 1000m. I'd need someone to help call out the adjustments, unless I have a really advanced optic.
Although with a fatty round like a 50 bmg, the velocity exiting the barrel is so high that you only need a few seconds (maybe a little less if I'm doing my math correctly in my head) for a 1000m+ shot. A chronograph would likely put it at well over 1,000fps, so flight time, ~3 seconds. Most of them are measured in feet per second when I look up videos regarding guns. I mean, they're almost all in the USA, so...it's fine. Conversion isn't too bad. 6ft = 1.8m. With the right optics, I could probably pull off a shot in the ten range on a moving paper target.
I would lose confidence using an AK47 at range. Some of those ARs, with the bipods, with some heavy rounds going through them, have surprisingly little upwards recoil. It's all backward, essentially, if you have the right stance.
I'd definitely have a blast just punching targets immediately in the 100-400 yard range. Bang, hit. No need to wait.
