Playstation... Portal???
Clearly inspired by the recent hype around portable gaming PCs like the Steam Deck sparking mainstream competition and the long-term success of the Switch bringing hybrid consoles to the masses, Sony released a... [drum roll] ....

STREAMING TABLET!! [badum tss]

https://www.ign.com/articles/playstation-portal-ps5-remote-player-available

It is basically a PS5 controller with a screen stuck inbetween and "only" costs about 200 bucks. But here's the catch, you'll either need a PS5 for local streaming or a PS Plus subscription for streaming on the Portal online (given you have a sufficient internet connection). Whats more, it doesn't have an Internet browser, so accessing public WiFi could prove difficult.
For only another 200 bucks more, you can get almost the same possibilities plus a full-featured PC that runs most games without an Internet connection, with the Steam Deck - it even comes with not only one but many web browsers! :D

The Playstation Portal effectively is a streaming tablet, that you can't even really use as a tablet because it's so bloody locked-down. You could connect your smartphone to a controller and probably get a better and more versatile product. Iirc, even Razer's take on the matter allows you more freedom.
Shame, I really hoped they'd release a worthy successor to the Vita, like a PS4 Portable or something - or even just a decent gaming tablet for that matter...

Seriously, who's this for?

Just more e-waste or a serious gaming device?

What do you think? Already thinking with Portals? ;P

If only they would.
It's a sorry attempt at selling their streaming service rather than creating an actual handheld console.

Total waste and cash grab.... they didn't have the guts to design properly a contender to the switch and no offline play

Kind of stupid tbh.
The appeal for the PC ones is that you can play while sitting on the couch, but you can already play consoles while sitting on the couch.

I get why it's called a Portal now. A handheld portal into their online gaming service.🙀

So you've never experienced the OG PSP's reload mechanism? ;P
Ive been using a PSP 1001 for emulation for years I read this like wait whats wrong with the ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ PSP.
Switch lite is better
Or hack a Vita, get a backbone, or any cheap emulation handheld is better

I was thinking of getting a vita for the stuff my 1001 cant handle. 50 bucks used still prob better than alot of the 100 dollar emulation devices on the market.

You could probably get a decent experience for half the price of the Portal with a budget smartphone and cheap controller.

Remember when Xbox risked their future and reputation banking on Starfield and Redfall as their only major exclusives?

This is Sony's "hold my beer" moment.

I think it's just e-waste. I've already streamed games from my PC to my phone, or tablet, with connected controllers over 5ghz home wi-fi. Even under ideal conditions the performance is passable for a casual game. I wouldn't rely on it for anything requiring quick reflexes or fast movements. You probably already have everything you need to do this. Do you really want to spend $200 to have a "portable" device that has to be tethered to your home wifi? I'd be more interested in an actual handheld console.... not whatever this is supposed to be.
