They sell more of them with less but still some profit (ignoring all the cases of stores blatantly lying about the price before the "sale").

It wasn't that long ago that it didn't even really exist in Canada. The prevalence of online shopping is no-doubt a factor as people can buy stuff from wherever as well as globalization.

It's also a competition thing. A lot of stores actually don't make much profit on Black Friday but feel like they have to participate or risk losing market share. Once one company does it they all have to to compete.

I feel like the bargains have gone way down thanks to online shopping, and that margins have gone up as a result. At least comparing some of the in-person deals I've heard to what's being advertised now.

I'd agree to be honest. It's kind of been a bit "diluted" because a lot of stores started lengthening the duration of the sales and even starting them on American Thanksgiving to get a head start on the competition. It has caused it to lose some of the craziness that used to exist with people camping out overnight and causing stampedes when the doors are opened.

I need to point out that what you are saying is happening more frequently in many arguments, be it on the internet, on podcasts or talk shows and it annoys the hell out of me. Sadly, it happens to often on these forums.

e,g on a talk show, I hear someone trying to bring a point across and the other side calling them racist or some other BS. And it irritates me because instead of having a counter argument to why their believe your wrong, it resorts to name calling and BS and spoils the debate.

Much like multinational corporations, unions and daylight savings time Black Friday is a degenerate construct that needs to be cast upon the proverbial rocks and shattered into nonexistence. People will disagree with this because deep down they know I'm right.
