Troy Baker only picked up VO work after The Last of Us, that's what made him famous.
Steve Blum has been VO famous since Cowboy Bepop.
If you've ever played Star Wars: The Old Republic, Blum is literally everywhere, you can hear his voice every day, different role.
You mean completely silent or no dialogue silent?
Cause if you just mean no dialogue...plenty of games already do that. Dark Souls for example...although not a good one as that does have some dialogue...just not a lot.
In terms of completely dialogue free? Sure it is totally possible. If the game depends on a story then they would have to animate the characters really well to convey emotion. That is all.
But if he had bad voice acting he wouldn't be entertaining. Or at least not be entertaining in the way many people like him.
He was in games before the Last of Us (Persona 4, Catherine, Arkham City).
He was relatively unknown before The Last of Us
He was entertaining because his voice acting was so bad it was good. Resident Evil is also renowned for its voice acting...and not because it is good.
Dante is a sarcastic, rock-loving, obnoxious, pizza-eating demon hunter who happens to be a total badass who got impaled to a wall in the first minute of the first DMC...and shook it off like it was nothing. Yea, he is cool. His voice acting is not, however.
People find him entertaining because like you said hes a sarcastic, rock-loving, obnoxious, pizza-eating demon hunter. If he had bad voice acting it would ruin why people are entertained by him. He would be entertaining the same way Zero is in that one scene from Megaman X4.
That game also didn't have what I would call grade A voice acting. Dante does have bad voice acting, but it isn't necessarily the fault of the voice actor (though he doesn't help) it is more due to the writing. But you have to have both to have great voice acting.
Look, people LOVE Ash from Evil Dead. Does that mean it was because of fantastic acting? No. Not at all.
Then what about Quinton Flynn (Raiden, Axel, Silver) and Alastair Duncan (Steven Armstrong). They were nominated for awards due to their performance in Metal Gear Rising. But they get no lead roles nowadays.
The problem is the only talented voice actor who keeps getting work is Troy Baker.
What did she get famous for?
