- No, it is not. It takes practice. Eventually you get the hang of it and it sort of becomes second nature.
How would you slow down and brake at a stop?
- Slow down in time, go down to 2:nd. That way, if the light goes green in time, you don't have to come to a complete halt. If you do stop completely. Go back to 1:st. Always start in 1:st if you've came to a stop/ very very slow.
How to not stall when getting out of a stop?
- 1:st gear, lift the clutch up just enough to feel the engine start to burden, apply a bit of throttle, start moving forward and ease the clutch back up and accelerate for realzies.
Do I have to switch gears in orders like 1,2,3,4,5 / 5,4,3,2,1.
- Changing gears upward I would keep in order, going down though is no biggie. You can be in top gear and change down to first as long as you've slowed down to an appropriate speed and be ready on the clutch so as to not stall.
Should e brake be always on when car is not in use?
- I would definitely have it on. Others might park the car without E brake but they've left the car in 1:st gear. Some do both. Double security I guess.
I'm still a learner-driver but I'm gotten quite far along. But do take all this with a grain of salt. You only really get the hang of it when you're actually in a manual car, doing it yourself.
Oh on the brake question again, if I was to come to a stop should I hit the clutch while braking or can I just brake?
Yes and no.
If coming to a stop, first let go of the throttle. You're still in gear so the car will naturally want to slow down on it's own. Then you're approaching the stop break and slow down untill you feel the engine start to burden then hit the clutch whilst breaking and stop, then into 1:st. Slow down too much and don't hit the clutch in time, you're gonna stall it. When you use the clutch, the car is basically freewheeling and will naturally want to keep rolling or even speed up if you're going downhill. So don't use it too early or too late.
Ah I see
All it takes is driving practice. More so than an automatic car To get the feel of shifting into first, and letting off the clutch while applying gas is the biggest hurdle. Second is learning at what speed gear changes happen in, in the car you are driving, by the sound. As long as you know the speed ranges, you can shift gears freely. And don't waste time changing gears once you figure it out, and get comfortable with it, while slowing down, Drop to neutral, and coast with the breaks. A little practice, and you know which gear to pop it into should the light change and you need to shift to move on.
Stopping and starting are the hard parts, the rest is an afternoon driving the car.
But ♥♥♥♥ I hate driving standard. It is just a pain in the ass.
But learn it. You never know when you will be stranded with a car your family let you borrow or your friend manages to knock himself out...leaving you as the only person to drive his dumb ass to the hospital in his car that has ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ manual transmission.
.....Sorry for ranting.
Yes....yes I would.
Of course, I learned how to drive just about any land vehicle (No tanks, but they can't be that hard, right?) due to environment and earlier requirements.
Stick is a great way to drive, 2 of the 3 cars in my home are stick. I like the feel of better control or my situation.
I think I multitask too much for manual transmission, I might burn a smoke, listen to the radio, skip that song, take a drink of my coffee....SQUIRREL!...roll up/down my window, try to find my phone when I drop it.
I think my ADD is getting worse.
At least I follow the speed limit. I appreciate the honesty of my truck....stop and go.
Turn the engine on
Stamp on the clutch pedal
Insert Gear 1 or R for Reverse
Release clutch pedal slowly
accelerate and hit the clutch pedal around 5000 rpm again, insert 2nd gear, do all again to 3rd gear.
If you want to stop on a stop sign you hit the brake pedal, when the rpm go under 2000, hit the clutch pedal again ,hold both pedals until the car stops, if you forget the clutch the engine will go out but this wont affect your brake maneuver.
A vehicle with a manual transmission should be parked in reverse gear with the parking brake set. That way if the brake fails, there isn't a possibility of the vehicle moving forward. The front wheels should be turned towards the curb also so that it does not roll down a hill (if parked on a hill that is and this applies to vehicles with automatic transmissions too).
You can skip gears going up or down if you so desire. Just ensure that there are enough engine RPMs so the vehicles does not lug for pack of power. When slowing down to a stop, keep the clutch engaged so that the engine slows down the car (downshift to a lower gear) and brake while doing so so you can completely stop only pushing the clutch in when the engine slows down enough otherwise you will stall the engine.
