Does somebody else feel that realistical graphics look strange?
I have this feeling a lot when I play Battlefield 3 and 4. I can't really explain it. The game itself looks awesome and although the graphics try to be as realistic as possible the game feels so artifical. I think the reason is simply because the game tries to look so realistic it feels so artifical to me. I don't have this problem with other games like Saints Row or or Payday. While both games also have good graphics I can definitively say" that's a video game.", because of their art style. When I play Battlefield 3/4 though, it always feels that there is something wrong or weird, because the graphics are close to reality but they don't match it completely or gameplay isn't real. I hope you can understand what I mean. Do you think that could be some kind of uncanny valley effect?

I geth the feeling too.

I think it's because realistic graphics isn't enough. The animation is also important. You have these ultra realistic dudes that move stiffly or unnatural so the result is creepy.

Like, sure the texture of his lips look nice but the way it opens when he talks is off.

?-?

Yes, it's called the "uncanny valley".

When something just borders realism, especially when dealing with living things like people and animals, that we can sense it isn't real and the brain becomes unsure of how to deal with it, causing you to be 'creeped out' or awkward of how to react.

Vsauce is a YouTuber who made a video on this called "Why are things creepy", a good watch and very informative channel.

Yeah the uncanny valley is slightly counter intuitive as the closer you get to realistic, but there is something slightly off makes the creepiness worse. And i agree go watch the Vsauce video on it.

I have never felt that with photorealistic images.

I think it has more to do with the animations rather than the models and textures.
bf4 not realistic enough

I don't think they look strange, they look awful.

Thanks for the video link. It was pretty interesting. Actually I never saw the word terror like described in the video. I always used the term horror for that feeling as well. And clowns are scary since Joker ;)

They don't really. They try to be videogame realistic. Unless you live in a world of unnatural color correction and lens flares everywhere.

The thing about graphics is that a nice world design and style that I find pleasing eclipses realistic grey rubble and brown dirt. Some games work best with ultra realism but isn't something all games should aspire to.
