Popular RTSs like LOTR: The Battle for Middle-earth?

The first RTS that I ever played was The Lord of the Rings: The Battle for Middle-earth. I loved it, however not the second one for some reasons. Neither of them are as popular as they were. What do you think is a good and curently popular substitue for it?

Never played the Battle for Middle-Earth games, but I did enjoy the first Dawn of War games, if that interests you at all?

I'm not sure if this guy is still tracking this thread, but.... Anyway, the Dawn of War games are kinda similar to Battle for Middle Earth, though they focus less on the maintenance of the base.
There are countless RTS games, just search by tags.

I know it's a bit off from Lotr: Battle for Middle Earth, but Rise of Nations is currently 75% off, so it might be a good deal. It's a pretty good RTS.
