well , It's pretty much situational.
And then there are those of us who prefer stealth and patience over alpha strikes and big flashy nonsense.
some games have just bad map design or sometime favor camping a lot's by being small or having narrow lanes that you can use to control the field and dominate by playing defensively.
I was playing city of heroes a long time ago and just having an absolute ball fighting bad guys with my Defender - on two of the slowest and most difficult to solo power sets (empathy/healing, and dark, which is a debuff set). Guy comes flying by and then starts harassing me with private messages, "you're doing it wrong. you're doing it wrong. you should be using this other character type. I know. I have 5 of them, you're doing it wrong".
It was the first and for a very long time the only person I'd ever blocked in that game. It was amazing. Like, dude, I don't care if you have 50 top level 'other thing I am not playing', you being good at that is fine, let me be incredibly good at this - I did solo that character up to the level cap with only very brief help, and even had people who used those sets on teams be very surprised when I did so.
I did a darkness/MA character that stalled out in the 30-50 range, with much of the 30's and 40's being solo'd, since dark drew aggro without actually providing any real tank and MA had one AoE skill that was designed to help your off-tank during your off rotation.
I think the best advice I ever got was that a pure tank build like Brute/Darkness was the only way dark was going to work, but also that Brute/Empathy was not only going to clear dungeons faster but also provide a lot more stability while it did so.
Apparently Villains fixed this by adding/reworking a Dark skill at 60, but at 43/53 and solo-locked I was so SOL that I kind of just gave up and stopped playing after I did a Necro/Summon build in the CoV beta.
The gist of my story here is that most game designers can't really account for the natural advantage that defensive play grants, so they instead design a system which arbitrarily favors aggressive play masquerading as defensive play.
For example, spamming heals on strong targets as a replacement for spamming attacks on weak ones.
Having to back away from a fight isn't satisfying.
The class I dislike the most in MMOs in general is archer because everyone plays archer.
Tbh defensive and support is underrated
healer and offense or rusher is overrated.
I'm like yeah i wanna fight but i wanna do it at a constant pace not rush and go hope you heal fast enough that the enemy doesn't kill you.
NO
i wanna plan out ♥♥♥♥ a final stalingrand Russian WWII vs Germany final push and win the game in a clutch match
imo clutch matches >>>>>> steamrolling or getting your ass handed to you. Like sooooo ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ close you get mad if you lose get excited af if you win but then another second later you and everyone are like okay that was epic. GG!!
I mean you can do that with healers and tanks or offensive gameplay styles but defensive and supports just prolong the gameplay.
Best example tf2 especially with payload.
Medics win the games and heavies but demos pyros and engineers especially keep people at bay.
Gotta spy check for enemy spies and watch out for enemy snipers and their line of sights.
meanwhile team on offense is like
okay theres 2 engies i see 1 teleporter trail but where the ♥♥♥♥ is the other one???? Is there even one? I see demo with a Scottish resistance so he's probably gonna have stickies all over the damn place or 1 massive area to separate medics from their patients or push back people.
All the while the timer is running the clock so you gotta do or die time on both sides. Build up their push forces and just make one last hail mary to continue / win the game or to keep the enemy back and win the game on the defense side.
