If you already know that you have the right input on your tv then buy whatever you want, but if you would need adaptors then just avoid buying older consoles because those adaptors suck.
Some older consoles have modern clones that work rather well, I have a Mega Retron HD and it is very good but honestly I prefer the Mega Drive mini.
I love the Gamecube but since backwards compatibility on the Wii is so good the GC is one of those I would not recommend, it just don't make sense buying one when you can have it too simply buying a Wii. Just make sure that the model you buy is backwards compatible and buy a GC pad and memory card. You will have two fantastic consoles in one.
The Wii U is much worse in my opinion, I would avoid that.
The PS2 had many great games, but you can find many of those games on the PS3 too and the PS3 is nicerr, you can watch pictures, videos, listen to music and so on too. I like those things.
On the other hand SOul Calibur 3 is absolutely fantastic and it is only available on PS2.
But on PS3 you have Oblivion and Child of Eden too...
So the ones that I would recommend the most are Wii (backwards compatible), PS2 and / or PS3.
Stay away from the Gamecube (unless you are a collector) simply because you can have it too buying a Wii, so it makes little sense buying "only" a Gamecube, even though it is a very good console, and I would not recommend an original Mega Drive (as I said, unless you are a collector) because a modern clone or a Mega Drive mini are a better option today in my opinion.
I did not even know such a thing existed. Seems interesting.
But I would avoid backwards compatible PS3. In theory it would be wonderful, but as far as I know it is the most unrealiable model that gets broken very easily. I never tried one, but I have always read that everywhere...
*Backward compatible PS3.
