The first release models were backwars compatible. PS 1 and 2, if I remember right, but they dropped the required chip set after the initial launch due to costs.
I have an first run model. I can play all my PS2 games as for PS1, it's only selective titles. Not all of them.

I just tried a Pac-Man Psone title on Ps3 and it worked just fine. I wonder if there is a master list of which titles work and which ones don't?

Do you have to have an internal memory card for EACH game?

Yes, be sure to make the memory card before playing the game. I learned this the hard way. All PS1 games go in the PS1 memory card and all PS2 games in the PS2 memory card.

All PS3 models can play PSone discs and can play PSone and PS2 games bought from the PSN Store.

The only PS3 models that can play PS2 discs are the original launch model 60GB and the 80gb model.

From my understanding the 60GB had the actual PS2 hardware and because of that, it can play every PS2 game without any graphical glitches but the 80GB only emulated the PS2 games so certain PS2 games wouldn't work properly on a 80GB PS3 due to glitches etc.

It's such a shame that only a few models can PS2 discs. If my PS3 was compatible with PS2 discs (I own a Super Slim), I would have sold my PS2 by now :(
