Looking for a pirate-themed PC game (90s)
Hi there, perhaps you veterans out there can help me out.
I'm trying to find the name of an old PC game that I played around the mid or late 90s.
Disclaimer: My description might be partially inaccurate / wrong, but I'm trying to do my best.

In essence, it's a sandboxy open world pirate game with permadeath, where you could sail around, attack other ships, trade in cities etc. Pretty basic stuff.
You could walk around on your ship, point & click style, in first person. I believe the scenes were all pre-rendered 3D images.
The ship was controlled in first person as well. You saw the steering wheel in front of you and the ship bounced up and down. Occasionally you'd end up finding cities or getting in trouble with other ships.

The naval battles were top-down 2D arenas. In these battles you could either destroy the other ship with your cannons or board it (or they could board yours). Then you'd have to defeat them in a sword duel (kind of like a 2D fighting game).

Another thing that I remember is the game over screen: A Grim Reaper type fella with a wiggling worm in one of his eyeholes.

I've tried finding this game via googling several times, but no luck so far.
I'd appreciate any hints, thanks.

Sid Meiers: Pirates! ?

Nevermind, i don't think it was it.

Yeah, sadly it's not the most obvious pirate game^^
The original is too old and the Gold remake is too cartoony.

There seems to be another one from 2004, but that's too modern.

That was the first thing that came to mind for me, as well. Because it sounds EXACTLY like Pirates, minus the moving around the ship and steering the boat.
This ones pretty good too. Open world, free choices. Should be up your alley.

Was it Age of Sail?
Traps 'n' Treasures, I played it when was kid, never completed past stage 2 because puzzles were too hard for me.
@Sakura: You obviously didn't understand what this thread is about.

@darkangel98s: (Age of Sail) Don't think so. That one looks more like a strategy / simulation game.

@SomeGuy: No. It wasn't a side scroller and it went for a less cartoony art style.

Monkey Island?
Doesn't seem to be Sea Legends either. I think it had a more realistic visual style to it.

It's definitely not Monkey Island.

Cutthroats: Terror on the HIgh Seas?

Actually I think youre thinking about Corsairs.
Cutthroats looks pretty RTS-ish. I don't remember the game having such elements.
Same thing for Corsairs.

Also, since it seems to be pretty difficult to figure it out, I should probably mention this:
I'm German, so there is a possibility that it might be some game from a German developer that didn't really get a lot of attention I guess...

was it sea dogs?
It's not Sea Dogs. The game didn't have any (real time) 3D graphics.
