Digital Age Gating (Facial Scan Technology)
It seems for video games rated M17 or higher, the ESRB wants to scan your face and use facial recognition to determine if the gamer is of age to be allowed to play the game.

ESRB had later released a statement clarifying that this technology does not "confirm the identity of users," nor it it intended to scan the faces to minors to determine whether they're old enough to purchase particular games. It only uses images to determine the subject's age in order to ensure compliance with COPPA privacy requirements.

"To be perfectly clear: Any images and data used for this process are never stored, used for AI training, used for marketing, or shared with anyone," the ESRB said in its statement. "The only piece of information that is communicated to the company requesting VPC is a 'Yes' or 'No' determination as to whether the person is over the age of 25."

VPC = Verifiable Parental Consent

So if your kid plays a violent video game, such as GTA 6 rated R18, and they are only 10, your own parent's face gave them the consent? The kid themselves can't install the game? Yet assuming an adult is detected, they could then grant whatever permissions they feel are appropriate for their children.

Is this a good or bad idea? There also likely be a buffer age of minor 25 years old to confirm, preventing older teens from posing as the parent.

Some parents allow their kids to play restricted video games and others don't, but is this going a bit too far? Like can't a store or online purchase of a video game verify the age of the person instead?

As time goes by, gender would have no meaning unless we're talking about giving birth physically. Though this may also be altered eventually.

The invasion of privacy and the amount of failure to secure data are terrible. We don't need more private data being collected as those collectors cannot be trusted to protect it. Nothing is not hackable, it just takes time, effort, and skill.

I don't know what's worse. People trying to normalize facial recognition, or the ones want access to cameras watching and filming your children...

Does this not violate C.O.P.P.A. anyway? You're not supposed to knowingly collect any personally identifying information from people you know to be under the age of 13. That includes something even so slight as an account name and youtube got hit pretty hard by the F.T.C. just for speaking about age demographics in a general sense just a few years ago. I think scanning a person's entire face is more invasive than either of those.

Also, what's the point of this exactly? It seems to me that offering parental controls with a password override on a child's account should suffice to set which permissions the kid has for purchasing any given category of game, assuming the kid even has access to a payment method without the direct involvement of a parent.

Am I the only one who covers my webcam with a piece of tape? Fun fact but I even cover my phones camera.

FBI be like... "who turned off the lights?"

No, you're not. And much to the displeasure of the glowies and corpos, some mainstream laptops ship with physical shutters or even switches that can't be manipulated electronically.

The first steps seem reasonable and quite easy, but then soon after you are being refused potato chips at the 7-11 counter for being too fat.

Then not long after that, you are being sent to a labor reform camp to be worked to death for sneaking food.

In their mind, no personal identifiable data is collected because the system is super-duper secure or something. 🐂💩‼ I don't know in which world they are living in, but you can't reliably compare data without first collecting it.

Well at least Corporations and Govts across the world never in history did shady shenaningans, that end up harming citizens / civilians in any way shape or form. So there's nothing to worry about what could happen, after facial recognition software is everywhere and is of common use.

Edit: On a totally unrelated note, just some old video about an old movie.
