How To Make a Girl's Name Pretty
This may be just me [being weird], but I think I discovered one reason why certain female names sound nice.

Don't post exceptions and offend people who have that name. :D:

the letter "L"

Regardless of whether it starts the name or is in the middle, I feel the "luh" sound produced by your tongue makes it awesome. The effect seems slightly weaker when the letter's at the end but not by much.

For explanation of why, click the following person's quote :

So Loser would be a pretty girl's name?

Try saying it without thinking of the meaning. Respell it "Luza" or something. Right now, the meaning of the word makes it hard to work out whether or not the sound itself is pleasant!

I'd say "kind of pretty but not great." The initial L helps, though.

Isn't phonaesthetics interesting?

Indeed. Great post, words can clink like ice in drink!

But beyond phonaesthetics is the consideration that the name must fit the person, and accentuate them positively. A good name is like a good outfit, in some sense, but I prefer to think of it as a short poem for who you are. That may sound fanciful but it is demonstrably true that people respond better to certain names, even in professional capacities, and they do have opinions on how much they like names in studies.

Given that, it never ceases to amaze me how bad people are at naming their children. Or even pets. I think a good deal of this comes from them having their hearts set on a name to begin with and then just dropping it on whatever. As if one had seen a dress they liked and dropped it on the first tomboy they had. Or if they got a Pug and decided to name it Eduardo. WTF? It doesn't fit and it doesn't matter if you think the name is adorable, someone or something has this moniker for life. The least you could do if you care is make it decent.

For example, since we're talking about girls' names (though it certainly applies to guys, too) and ones with liquid consonants and elonganted vowels, let's consider the name "Alyssa." Pretty enough, seems a touch informal and playful as though someone shortened the name of royalty. But if the last name is Ginakious it sounds just friggin' horrible. It's like somebody wrote a terrible poem that didn't rhyme. Three syllables to three but the harsh ending of Giankous, contrasts with the flow of Alyssa. Switch her name to Jessica or better yet, Jessika, and you've got a Greek Goddess. It alliterates and the sounds peak at precisely the perfect places.

Or, y'know, you could just go name your kid Wilbur Xen Crabswallow or something, because WTF? "Oh, hs grandmother's name was Xen and Wilbur was his Grandfather's name. Our name wasn't Crabswallow originally but it got changed." Nobody gives a crap! Change it again! I can understand wanting to honor the names of loved ones but how much honor is it really when their namesake and possibly kin is going to get made fun of their entire life for having a horrible name?

And of course, there are other things to consider, particulary what connotations certain names have in a given society, but I'll not go into that since we're discussing phonaesthetics alone. Suffice it to say, a good name is just as I decribed it, imo. It's like a garment or a poem, it needs to fit to make it truly have any quality, including "pretty."

Most happy to boil it down for you - Don't ever have children, cancer is contagious. It says so in much longer writings.
