MGS 4 for instance, had more cutscenes than gameplay. And that is what really bugged me about that game. Luckily they addressed that for the new one.
Cutscenes aren't getting longer and longer. Certain people have always used long cutscenes. Xenosaga on the PS2 had some of the longest damn cutscenes I can think of. I couldn't stand it. I am talking 70 minute long cutscenes.
But will cutscenes go away? No. It is part of a certain style of game.
I doubt people would enjoy Xenosaga or MGS skipping cutscenes tho, but if you are playing them, you probably don't care at all. I for one don't care, enjoyed the hell out of Xenosaga/Gears or older MGS immersion...
It's ♥♥♥♥ when you get unskippable cutscenes, like FFX...sometimes you get a game over and needs to see the same dialogues again ahuahuah
Was it me? Because I find cutscenes a plesant way to give the games story a more cinematic feel while not detracting from the moment by allowing the PC to be off diddling a trashcan while important story moments happen. But I am not really quoteable. Unless you count "I would totally pay a thousand dollars to haymaker a Nun." But that quote isn't for everyone.
Was it gamers in general? I thought the general consensus among gamers was "Cutscenes Bad" after the debacle of Metal Gear Solid 4. I though most gamers (not me) prefered all conversations to take place in game. That they thought of cutscenes as a thing of the past. I don't have a single source to point you to, just the blanket of professional journalists touting cutting edge graphics being the death of cut scene, and general rumblings on the internet after 2011.
Was it you? Are you the one who thinks cutscenes are good? I really doubt it. You don't seem to really be a huge fan of things beyond V.R., indy games, and the superiority of PC gaming. Actually, I can't really find much you do aprove of, outside of your dedication to V.R. Maybe I need to read more of your posts. Feel free to site me one where you talk up something. I like to expand my world views.
But I seem to have strayed. I apologise.
See the first full paragraph for why I enjoy cutscenes in games (both flashy CGI affairs and ones using in-game graphics (which I am a huge fan of. Thanks Mass Effect and Saints Row for really using my character to further immerse me.)) Length doesn't really matter to me, as long as I am entertained and the story is progressing. But that is just my humble opinion.
Lots of people like them. The first MGS was a total revelation. Nobody had made a game so detailed in plot and it felt like playing a big action movie. Back then...that was considered a fantastic thing. We didn't have the technology for open world and player driven emergent gameplay like we do not. That is the direction MGS5 has gone. And it pulls it off brilliantly.
But, well shot cutscenes can be incredibly entertaining....IF they are written and directed well. That is a pretty rare thing in games. But you can skip most cutscenes in games and some players REALLY like watching cutscenes as we can see by all the ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ about how few of them there are in MGS5 compared to older games. Yesterdays complaint becomes todays improvement...only for players to now complain they miss the cutscenes.
I don't mind well done cutscenes at all AS LONG as the game has more gameplay than cutscenes. Once that ratio gets skewed in the cutscene direction, it becomes a problem for me.
I heard that MGS5 is a terrible game with long cut scenes, bad story, bad acting, limited movement and painfully easy to play.
That aside, I think they should just put all the cut scenes on a different file and call it a movie and if someone wants to buy that pack they can.
If I've been playing the game for a while, I've gotten used to seeing the game world through the gameplay perspective. Making the cutscene happen in that perspective makes it seamless. Making the cutscene look all fancy actually ruins the immersion, instead.
Then you heard wrong Tux. None of that stuff is really true. Just saying. There are more than enough reviews that state otherwise.
Putting a story focused games story on another file that you have to buy seperately makes no sense whatsoever.
From whom? Everything I've heard about MGS5 is that it's fantastic.
Anyway, I'll tell you why mainstream games use cutscenes:
That idea right there is why. This type of thinking encourages developers to make games more like TV shows and movies by continually making them more and more scripted and linear until they basically ARE movies but you get to play the gunfights.
The other reason is that movies and television are respected as art forms by the general population whereas video games are not. Or at the very least, they don't seem to be. Game developers then try to mimic TV and movies because the idea is that in doing so games will become more respected. This idea is also somewhat perpetuated due to the aforementioned line of thinking.

my opinion is that many of you should be trying off the radar games and not just relying on these mainstream games.
As turning turning cutsenes into movies.
I am all for not making curscenes into movies if people dont like cutscenes however, because they keep making them I assume people do. it would be nice if those cut scenes where not in my game
Actually to be honest I dont play games with stories. I save nextflix for story hour
