How do you play a football (soccer) simulation?

Over on the O... site, they are pushing their latest football (soccer) simulation game. It gets very expensive if you want to buy the use of some famous players. It can be single player or multiplayer. I looked through all the advertisement for it but I do not see anything about what do you actually do with this game. I saw some youtube videos but they just show the 22 players running all over the field. I have no idea what the player is doing.

My question is: for single player what do you do with a game like this? How do you play it? I assume there is some mode where you activally control one of the players on the field and I would guess you can switch players at will. But then why care about the famous players if you are actually playing? I also assume that coaching the team during the play is involved. But then do you just watch the compurter AI play itself?
