PS2 Slim. Is this normal?
When playing music CDs with PS2 Slim is it normal for the fan to start churning after 5 minutes? Ambient temp. is around 17° C.

It's a 9000x model and works perfectly in every other respect as far as I can tell.

Unlike the Dreamcast which has an awesome Noctua fan mod, there doesn't seen to be much going on with PS2 fan mods.

If it's not normal I might just pull it apart and give it a clean and replace the thermal pads. I'm aiming for silence without butchering the console like I've seen with PS2 fan mods which I have seen.

Given that a lot of computers nowadays don't even come with optical drives as standard people have to get creative with how they listen to their old CD's.
that's why we buy a cd player
Or an optical drive, preferably SATA but if for some reason people can't there's always USB ones. As for playing CD's I consider VLC (one of many options for playing CD's, DVD's and other media) to be one of the first things I will always install on any new machine.

Keep in mind that the 9XXXX series has the power supply built in (unlike the 7XXXX as it has a power brick) so the fan ramps up either way as it needs to keep the extra components cool.

Though the CD situation is odd. Maybe the laser is starting to show its age.
Ah yes, I reckon that the 7xxxx series is quieter for that reason.

The CD reading is impeccable, it's just that the fan turns on after playing music. It actually sounds exactly the same as a stock Dreamcast fan when it gets going.

I'll take it apart and give it a full clean then see what happens.
Well, I fixed the fan issue! Temps were hovering above 67° C, as measured by PS2 Temps.

Pulled it apart and the thermal pad was totally buggered. It was actually crisp in one particular spot and crumbled when I took it off.

Replaced the pad with a Thermal Grizzly bad boy and now it's quiet as a mouse, between 35° and 45° depending on load and duration of play. It would probably be even cooler stood it on its side.

Moral of the story: if you have a PS2 slim be sure to replace the thermal pad after a while! ...(change the CMOS battery while your there too).

Imagine having to use a ps2 slim to listen to music in 2020 ...

Yeah you can buy an extern blue drive but you can also buy pcs with an integrated one.I think a portable variant is more useful tho
