PS2 Slim. Is this normal?
When playing music CDs with PS2 Slim is it normal for the fan to start churning after 5 minutes? Ambient temp. is around 17° C.

It's a 9000x model and works perfectly in every other respect as far as I can tell.

Unlike the Dreamcast which has an awesome Noctua fan mod, there doesn't seen to be much going on with PS2 fan mods.

If it's not normal I might just pull it apart and give it a clean and replace the thermal pads. I'm aiming for silence without butchering the console like I've seen with PS2 fan mods which I have seen.

My PS2 slim completely obliterated each and every CD-Rom disc, so I wouldn't even dare to insert another one in.

My slim is quiet reading CD's
Ambient in the house is like 15 degrees

Wow. Do you mean that it destroys CDs but not PS2 disks, or both? I've heard they wreck PS1 disks so I've avoided playing those.

Interesting. My fan has an annoying buzz to it, decreasing the signal to noise ratio I suppose you could say lol.

I wouldn't have thought that playing a music CD would be enough to trigger the fan.

But then again, my PS3 actually does it too but it's not so noticible and I know with that it's normal.

My copy of Crazy Taxi (blue CD) got scratched so badly that I couldn't boot it up the second time.

Other PS2 games would eventually get scratched, but any CD-Rom would die after one play session. There's definitely something wrong with my PS2, but luckily I don't use it much nowadays.

Keep in mind that the 9XXXX series has the power supply built in (unlike the 7XXXX as it has a power brick) so the fan ramps up either way as it needs to keep the extra components cool.

Though the CD situation is odd. Maybe the laser is starting to show its age.

Given that a lot of computers nowadays don't even come with optical drives as standard people have to get creative with how they listen to their old CD's.

OP

Sound is reduced via good blade design in the case of small units with poor breathing as so to speak.

I've got a good AV receiver so I use the PS2 slim and SPDIF connection. The laser in it works surprisingly well, it doesn't skip a beat even with CDs that are a bit scratched. It's compact and top loading and doesn't need to be powered on to change disks, so it's pretty convenient for my setup. Suits my needs perfectly.

Ah, the humble and much maligned audio CD. Hated by enlightened vinyl enthusiasts, loathed by unenlightened streaming boors :steamsad:
