Black Sabbath (any era wether it be Ozzy, Tony Martin or Dio) if you don't know who the founding fathers of Doom and Heavy Metal are, i suggest to go back to the school of metal and brush up.
Dio
Ozzy Osbourne a.k.a The Godfather of Heavy Metal (any album but Blizzard of Ozz and Diary of a Madman are the best)
Saxon
Judas Priest
or any other metal band from the late 70's through the 80's and early 90's, leave those bands who utilize pig squeals and you're set.
Oh a word of advice, register to a metal forum and ask for suggestions if you haven't allready and youtube is your friend.
Just letting you know that I have listen to major bands like Black Sabbath and Metallica I just listed some bands that people don't know of that well.
You really think someone who knows bauhaus doesn't know entry-tier heavy metal like judas priest and sabbath?
I get that Goth isn't hard music, but on the other hand I'm pretty positive that Death Metal and Black Metal isn't soft. ( I'm more into Goth Rock/Metal but I do listen to Death, Thrash, Black Metal (not really black metal) from time to time. I'm just broadening my music list. I'm more old school rock and metal so I like the 70's - 80's a lot more.
Suicidal Tendencies
Slayer
Stormtroopers of Death
Just to name a few..
