Are membrane keyboards really that bad for gaming?
Ofc mechanical keyboards are better, but are membrane keyboards (the good ones ofc) absolute trash when it comes to gaming?

Here's a trick that works for wet cell phones too: Wrap the keyboard in paper towels and cover it completely with rice. With a cell phone, you don't need to wrap it, just stick it in a bowl of uncooked rice. The rice will absorb the moisture from it in no time.
And the good thing about that: If You again wrap the keyboard with some foil - and put it into boiling water: You´ll have a real gamers meal. Just add some sweet and sour sauce. And if You eat it with those sticks out of the keyboard: It´s perfect training for a better hand-eye coordination.

I usually just use the rice trick with those salt shakers. ;o)
lol I'm all about having rice in my salt shaker.

It's analog. This is why I disagree with you, because you're not exactly knowledgeable.
I've read several reviews, Cherrys own page, and there is nothing that claims or states that it's analog.

So could you cite your source?

Look under the section about RealKey technology.

Thanks, looks like I didn't look hard enough.

Though this isn't true analog in the sense of variable through pressure/movement, it doesn't produce that effect, and is still only an on/off switch, thus can be classified as digital.
It just uses this 'analog' ability to reduce latency, just like my Endgame Gear XM1, it provides barely any gain over the normal digital signal (~2-3ms), and for keyboards it would do much the same.

A true analog keyboard would be something like the Wooting One, the Razer Huntsman Analog, and even the Steelseries Apex Pro.

The former two using photoresistor optical switches, and the latter using hall effect (magnetic) switches.

The former two allow you to have a variable pressure/response from each key, much like that of a joystick.
The latter only allows for binding 2 functions to the same key, activating each function depending on depth of key press.

Those are true analog.

Yeah it's not "true" analog, but 1-0 isn't always digital either. e.g. when analog triggers are used like digital buttons, they are still analog.

You need to learn the difference between Subjective and Objective.

Objective means something is basically scientifically or mathematically better than something else.

Subjective means something is better because YOU like it more, even if it is objectively worse or less popular.

Favorite keyboard type is "subjective" and different between different people.

And if you really want it broken down... Objectively... Membrane keyboards make up a bigger portion of market share than mechanical keyboards, mainly because most people don't want to spend over $50 on a keyboard.

That would technically make membrane keyboards "Objectively" more popular.
"Objectively... Membrane keyboards make up a bigger portion of market share than mechanical keyboards, mainly because most people don't want to spend over $50 on a keyboard."

This is not objective. This is personal preference of a majority of people. Still subjective.

Who needs to learn the difference again?

The lengths a fool will go to to make people think he's right...:steamfacepalm:

If something that is objective has no opinion. It is objective truth that people use membranes more because of cost. I don't think you get the difference. Yes it might be personal preference, but in terms of the popularity statistic, it is objective truth that membranes are more popular. Facts and Opinions, Objective and Subjective, learn the difference. Me saying I prefer using one keyboard type over the other is an opinion and is subjective, but me saying the membrane keyboards sell more and are more commonly used is a fact and is an objective truth.

Is something cheap and generic better or worse than something you can fully customise?

That really depends on how well you can customise it. If you're having a bad time with a mechanical board, you built it wrong. Or you just pulled some cheapo fashion brand board out of the box and used it as is.

No, honestly that's something only a salesman would say.

A good quality keyboard is all that is really needed if one is min/maxing for... keyboard. I prefer mechanical keyboards for general use, but that makes me pretty loud when typing.

IMO - The biggest issue is low quality "gaming" keyboards being sold at stupid prices and then the tiny, itty-bitty, keyboards people think are "standard size" these days.

I used one for a long time, they aren't bad as far as pushing the keys go. It was the lack of anti-ghosting that was the issue because it was just a normal IBM keyboard, not a gaming kb.

edit: oh... necro. lol ok maybe there is a decent reason to lock these...

to the topic - the type of keyboard doesn't really matter.

some keyboards will be overpriced but give bad signal inputs, other keyboards will look cheap but give fantastic performance.

so its best to look at the manufacturer and the quality of the boards they produce, don't let them talk you into buying overpriced junk.

its an interface device, not a central processing unit. it should never cost more or near to the cpu, its much more simple to manufacture =p

like logitek trying to sell those g series keyboards for like 300 bucks. ridiculous.

ehhh. i want to give 'peep' a hard time for necroing and not creating a new thread, but we can still share some gaming wisdom. its still relevant to today's issues.

true. I would add that lots of them have painted keys that will wear off in a year or two as well, like razor crap.
