Massively multiplayer territory control games that play like Risk?
Does anyone know of any games that fit the following conditions:

* massively multiplayer, or at least around 20 or more players per game who are organized into teams or can self-organize into teams/alliances (or something like that)
* a territory control game, in the style inspired by Risk - a focus on grand strategy and territory control, NOT on individual units in combat
* playable on a stationary PC that runs Windows (i.e. not a mobile-only game, and not a game that requires a physical presence in a certain location)

The game does NOT need to be on Steam. It can be a downloadable or browser game. It can be for free or paid.

Basically, I'm looking for something that is similar to GoCrossCampus (a.k.a. GXC), if anyone remembers what that is. Another game that seems to work similar, but which I never played, seems to be called Turf.

Bonus points to you if:
* the game you mention gives players a role to play even after they lose all their territories
* the game allows multiple teams to have troops on a single territory at once
* other interesting emergent gameplay features

Do these play out in a Risk-like style where people control territories chunk by chunk at a time?

planetside 2 is a fps that has a faction system where you can capture each factions territories

Civ does. It's a world map split up into hexagon-shaped tiles. There are several ways to win the game, but it's highly configurable and you can set it up so that domination is the only way to win.

Hm, I think I'd rather have strategy game with a broader scope rather than playing one specific unit within the conflict. I'm less interested in the combat at the unit level than the overall conflict at the level of territory control and resource positioning. Thanks for the rec though.

Hm, I should check out Civ V then. Thanks!

Any other recs?

Browse the 4x tag. Civ is probably the best suited to what you're looking for, but who knows? You might find something you like better.

I'm not too familiar with the term 4X, but isn't that sort if more like an Age of Empires type thing? Basically, with more micromanagement of resources and military units. I like AoE but that's not what I'm looking for here. I'm looking for something that's a little bit more conceptual -- how Risk abstracts military action to dice rolls for each country-to-country conflict, for example.

I know there exists an online Risk-like game site called Conquer Club but that's the closest thing I've seen; all that is is basically Risk online with custom maps and a handful of players, not a massively multiplayer thing. I am surprised that, given its huge popularity when it existed, I haven't seen anything like GXC pop up in the nearly six years now that GXC has ceased to exist.
On a smaller scale, there is Verdun and Red Orchestra 2/Rising Storm. You be part of a platoon and capture sectors. Both games are realistic per se; one shot one kill, bullet drop, moral bar, etc. Similar to Planetside 2 is War mode in Heroes & Generals. In H&G, you try to capture Western Europe. You join a platoon with other friendly platoons and fight enemy platoons on a map that makes up a tiny part of W. Europe. Basically if you have played Planetside 2, War mode In H&G should feel right at home.
PlanetSide 2 kind of meets your stuff.

Looking at the video and description, I think it's still too focused on the details. I'm looking for something whose core mechanics are simpler, but which thus gives rise to more emergent gameplay at higher strategic levels.

Put another way: I want to play massively multiplayer Risk.

Already suggested, but again, it focuses too much on the tactical details for what I'm looking for. I'm looking for a game where there's less tactical detail and more strategic detail on a broader scale, with some elements of diplomacy and participation rather than being able to play a specific unit on the battlefield.

I haven't played Planetside 2, but again it seems like it's too down-in-the-weeds to fit the kind of game I'm actually thinking of.

Checking the descriptions of H&G, Verdun, and Red Orchestra 2, it seems that, again, they're too down-in-the-weeds for what I'm looking for.

Admittedly, I have a pretty specific type of game I'm asking for. Basically I just want to know whether such a game currently exists.

Somewhat more like what I was thinking of, though I was basically looking to see if there's an MMO implementation of a game like this. Still, that's an interesting game, thanks for introducing me to it.
